Match the alternative to the image's purpose

The W3C WAI Images Tutorial distinguishes informative, decorative and functional images. Informative images need text that conveys their essential meaning; purely decorative images use an empty alternative, while linked or button images need wording about their function. The surrounding content matters when choosing an alternative.

Prepare one bilingual review record

For this fixture, record the English and Spanish article URLs, the intended image, its file hash, the approved description and the visible illustration credit. Compare both language versions with the same picture. Translate the meaning rather than copying an English label into the Spanish page.

The illustration shows abstract article cards, image descriptions and a magnifying glass. It contains no measurements, customer records or evidence of a completed project. Its credit tells readers how the visual was made; the description explains what it represents.

Check the delivered page

  1. Open each language version and confirm the expected article title.
  2. Inspect the rendered cover and its alternative text, then read the visible credit.
  3. Follow the language link and confirm it refers to the matching test article.
  4. Compare the delivered image hash with the recorded asset and keep the observation time.

Record a missing description or incorrect language as a failed check. A file in a local folder, a CMS draft and a deployed page are separate observations. Passing this small fixture does not establish that every image on the website has been reviewed.
